What to Expect at Your First Gymnastics Class

Gymnast at Dynamite Gymnastics Center

The first class is a big deal β€” for your gymnast and for you. Plenty of parents hover by the door that first day wondering if their kid will cling, cry, or sprint onto the floor without a backward glance. (It's usually the sprint.) Here's what actually happens, so you both walk in relaxed.

A few easy things before you come

Dress your child in something stretchy they can flip in β€” a leotard, or just a fitted shirt and shorts. Skip buttons, zippers, and jewelry, and go barefoot (grip socks are fine). Hair up and off the face. Bring a water bottle, hold off on a big snack right beforehand, and aim to arrive about five minutes early so there's time for a bathroom stop and a look around before things kick off.

Finding us

We're at 4956 Boiling Brook Pkwy, North Bethesda, MD 20852, with free parking right out front. If it's your first visit, give yourself an extra few minutes to check in at the desk. Not booked yet? Here's how to book a trial class.

Walking in

A coach greets your gymnast by name and walks them into the group β€” no awkward handoff needed if your kid would rather you do the introductions. Most new kids start a little shy and loosen up within minutes once the music's going. Because our North Bethesda classes stay small (we cap them at 6–8), the coach always knows who's new and keeps them close.

How the hour flows

Class opens with a warm-up β€” running, animal walks, stretches, and a game or two to shake out the nerves. From there the group rotates through stations matched to their age and level: forward rolls, the low beam, the bars, and the runaway crowd favorite, the foam pit. Coaches break every skill into small steps, so a first-timer and a kid who's been coming for months can share a station and both walk away feeling like they nailed it. Things wind down with a stretch, a quick recap of what they worked on, and β€” for the little ones β€” a hard-earned sticker.

Can I stay and watch?

Yes. We have a wide viewing area with free Wi-Fi, and you're welcome to stay for the whole class. Some kids do better when a parent isn't in their sightline, especially younger ones who'd rather perform for you than listen to the coach β€” use your judgment, and your coach will tell you honestly if stepping back would help.

What if my child cries or won't go in?

It happens, and it's not a problem. Our coaches have seen every version of a nervous first day. Nobody is dragged onto the floor β€” sometimes a child watches the first half from the edge and joins in week two, and that's a completely normal path. Let the front desk know beforehand if your child is anxious and we'll pair them with a coach who's especially good with new kids.

What you'll see by the end

Flushed cheeks, a giant grin, and a kid already asking when they get to come back. You probably won't see a textbook cartwheel on day one. What you'll see is your child trying something hard, listening, and having a blast doing it β€” which is exactly the point.

Which class should they start in?

Little ones (from 6 months) start in preschool gymnastics. School-age kids typically begin in recreational gymnastics or GymFusion if they'd rather keep moving than rotate through apparatus. Kids obsessed with flipping often land in trampoline & tumbling. Still deciding? Our guide to choosing a gym and the FAQ cover the rest.
